The result is a practical starting estimate rather than a veterinary feeding prescription. Actual needs may vary because of breed, metabolism, environment, health, reproductive status, activity, and food digestibility.

How Are Dog Calories Calculated?

The calculator converts your dog's weight to kilograms and first estimates resting energy requirement, or RER. It then applies a dog-specific adjustment factor based on life stage and spay or neuter status. Adult and senior estimates also account for the selected activity level and body condition.

RER estimates the energy required for basic body functions at rest. Applying the adjustment factor produces a practical estimate of maintenance energy requirement, or MER—the calories a dog may need for normal daily life, activity, and its current physiological stage.

How Much Dry Food Should I Feed My Dog?

Enter the energy information printed on the dog food label using kilocalories per cup (kcal/cup) or kilocalories per kilogram (kcal/kg). The calculator converts your dog's estimated daily calories into cups of dry food per day and per meal.

When grams per cup are available, the result can also show grams per day and grams per meal. Package weight and price are optional, but they are needed to estimate how long a bag lasts and the monthly or yearly feeding cost.

How Much Wet Food Should I Feed My Dog?

For canned, pouched, or tray-packaged wet food, enter kilocalories per package, kilocalories per 100 grams, or kilocalories per kilogram. When package size is available, the calculator can estimate packages and grams of wet food per day and per meal.

Purchase-pack quantity and price are optional. Add them when you want to estimate how long the purchased pack lasts and the ongoing wet-food cost.

How Does Mixed Feeding Work?

In mixed feeding, the dry-food percentage represents the percentage of your dog's main-food calories supplied by dry food—not a percentage by weight or volume. For example, a 60% dry setting assigns 60% of the main-food calories to dry food and the remaining 40% to wet food.

Use the Treat calorie reserve setting to set aside part of the daily calorie estimate for treats, chews, table food, or other extras. Any calories not covered by that reserve should be considered separately.

What About Raw Food Diets for Dogs?

This calculator is designed for commercial dry food, wet food, and mixed feeding. It does not calculate homemade or raw-food diets because these diets require more than a calorie estimate.

Raw feeding requires careful control of protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and overall nutrient balance. Poorly planned raw diets may also create food-safety risks for dogs and people in the household.

Dog owners considering a raw or homemade diet should use a complete recipe formulated by a veterinarian or board-certified veterinary nutritionist. Do not use this calculator alone to design a raw-food feeding plan.

Does Activity Level Affect the Result?

Yes. Adult and senior calorie estimates may be adjusted for practical differences in activity level and body condition. These adjustments help produce a more useful starting estimate, but they cannot capture every difference between individual dogs.

The high-activity option is intended for active companion dogs. It is not designed for working, racing, hunting, herding, sled, service, or endurance dogs, which may have substantially different energy needs.

The result is a starting estimate for planning daily calories, cups per day, wet-food portions, mixed feeding, and feeding cost. Compare it with the food manufacturer's feeding guide, monitor your dog's weight and body condition, and adjust portions gradually.
