๐Ÿ“˜ Currency conversion formula

Converted amount = original amount ร— provider reference rate

Reverse rate = 1 รท forward rate

A new rate is requested only when the selected currency pair changes. After the rate arrives, changing the amount performs the multiplication locally without requesting the same rate again.

๐Ÿ•’ What โ€œlatest availableโ€ means

Frankfurter v1 provides the latest available working-day reference-rate data and returns the applicable rate date. It is not a live trading feed and should not be treated as a guaranteed bank, card, cash-exchange, or transfer rate.

This calculator does not use an undated static fallback. If the provider cannot return valid data, no converted amount is shown.

๐Ÿงฎ Hypothetical worked example

Assume, only for this example, that 1 USD = 1.35 CAD:

Forward conversion

100 USD ร— 1.35 = 135 CAD

Reverse rate

1 รท 1.35 = 0.740741 USD per CAD

The 1.35 example rate is hypothetical and is not the current exchange rate.

๐ŸŒŽ United States and Canada use cases

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ USD to CAD and other currencies

U.S. users can estimate travel spending, foreign invoices, subscriptions, and international purchases. Your bank, card issuer, exchange service, or transfer provider may use a different rate and add a spread or fee not shown here.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ CAD to USD and other currencies

Canadian users can estimate U.S. purchases, travel costs, and foreign payments. The Bank of Canada publishes its own daily reference data, but the live result on this page is requested from Frankfurter rather than directly from the Bank of Canada.

๐Ÿ”’ Method, privacy, and limitations

Method: Entered amount ร— Frankfurter reference rate. Reverse rate = 1 รท forward rate.

Rate frequency: Latest available working-day data returned by the provider, not a live trading quote.

Privacy: The selected base and target currency codes are sent to Frankfurter to request rate data. The amount multiplication occurs locally in your browser and the amount is not included in the rate request.

Limitations: Provider spreads, card fees, cash-exchange commissions, transfer charges, taxes, and transaction-date differences are excluded.

โ“ Currency Converter FAQ

๐Ÿ’ฑ How does currency conversion work?

The converted amount equals the entered amount multiplied by the provider reference rate. The reverse rate equals 1 divided by the forward rate.

๐Ÿ•’ Are the exchange rates updated in real time?

No. The converter requests the latest available working-day reference rate from Frankfurter. Reference data is not a continuously updating tradable quote, and the displayed rate date should be checked before use.

๐Ÿฆ Is this the same rate my bank or card will use?

Not necessarily. Banks, card networks, exchange services, and transfer providers may use different processing dates and add spreads, markups, commissions, or service fees.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ What happens when rate data is unavailable?

The calculator displays an unavailable message and does not substitute an undated built-in exchange rate. Try again later or confirm the rate with another reliable source.

๐Ÿ“Š What is a reference exchange rate?

A reference rate is an informational rate for comparison and calculation. It is not a guaranteed consumer rate, bid or ask quote, or final transaction rate.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ How do I convert USD to CAD?

Select USD as the base currency, select CAD as the target currency, and enter the dollar amount. The amount is multiplied locally by the latest available USD-to-CAD working-day reference rate.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ How do I convert CAD to USD?

Select CAD as the base currency, select USD as the target currency, and enter the Canadian-dollar amount. The result uses the latest available CAD-to-USD working-day reference rate.

๐Ÿ’ณ Why is my card conversion different?

The card transaction may be processed on a different date, and the issuer or network may apply a foreign-transaction fee, conversion markup, or different exchange rate.

๐Ÿง What is dynamic currency conversion?

Dynamic currency conversion lets a merchant or ATM show a charge in your home currency. The offered rate may include a markup, so compare the rate and fees before accepting it.

โœˆ๏ธ Can I use this converter for travel planning?

Yes. It can provide a planning estimate for accommodation, meals, transportation, and shopping. Add a buffer for possible rate movements and provider fees.

๐ŸŒŽ Which currencies are supported?

The calculator supports USD, CAD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CNY, AUD, and CHF. A result depends on the selected pair being available from the reference-rate provider.

๐Ÿ”„ Can I swap the currencies?

Yes. The swap button reverses the base and target currencies. This triggers one new rate request for the reversed pair while preserving the entered amount.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Is this suitable for trading decisions?

No. It is an educational reference converter, not a live market feed or tradable quote. Trading platforms may use bid and ask prices, spreads, commissions, and faster data.
