📘 How salary conversion works

Annual gross income is converted into common pay periods using standard annual divisors. Hourly wages are first annualized using the working hours and weeks you enter, then divided evenly across the selected number of periods.

In practical terms, the calculator helps answer questions such as “What is the annualized average per pay period?”, “What does this hourly wage equal per year?”, and “Can this salary support my monthly budget?”

🧮 Core formulas

Annual Gross = Hourly Wage × Hours/week × Weeks/year

Annual Working Hours = Hours/week × Weeks/year

Hourly Equivalent = Annual Salary ÷ Annual Working Hours

Average Weekly Gross = Annual Salary ÷ 52

Average Biweekly Gross = Annual Salary ÷ 26

Average Semi-monthly Gross = Annual Salary ÷ 24

Average Monthly Gross = Annual Salary ÷ 12

Estimated After-Deduction Pay = Gross Pay × (1 − Deduction Rate)

For example, 40 hours per week for 52 weeks equals 2,080 annual working hours. At $25 per hour, estimated annual gross income is $52,000. In reverse, a $52,000 annual salary divided by 2,080 hours is approximately $25 per hour.

Actual earnings may differ because of unpaid leave, overtime, bonuses, commissions, irregular schedules, or partial-year employment.

🎯 Practical ways to use it

  • 💼 Compare hourly and salaried job offers using annual gross income
  • 💵 Compare annualized average weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, or monthly amounts
  • ⏱ Convert an hourly wage into an estimated annual salary
  • 📅 Understand why biweekly and semi-monthly amounts differ
  • 📊 Use average monthly gross income as a starting point for rent and budget planning
  • 🧾 Apply a rough deduction rate when an actual pay statement is not available

Biweekly vs semi-monthly

This model divides annual income by 26 for a biweekly average and by 24 for a semi-monthly average. The calculated amounts do not reproduce an employer’s dated payroll calendar.

Simple $60,000 example

A $60,000 annual salary is approximately $5,000 per month, $2,500 semi-monthly, $2,307.69 biweekly, or $1,153.85 weekly before deductions.

Worked example: $25 per hour

This static example uses the same calculation function as the interactive tool: $25 per hour, 40 hours per week, 48 paid working weeks per year, a 20% planning deduction rate, and biweekly pay.

Annual working hours = 40 × 48 = 1,920

Annual gross income = $25 × 1,920 = $48,000.00

Average biweekly gross = $48,000.00 ÷ 26 = $1,846.15

Estimated biweekly deductions = $1,846.15 × 20% = $369.23

Estimated biweekly amount after deductions = $1,476.92

An actual 40-hour working week at $25 per hour is $1,000. The calculator’s weekly result is instead $48,000 ÷ 52 = $923.08 because it spreads the 48-week annualized income across all 52 calendar weeks. The 20% rate is an arithmetic illustration, not an official tax rate or take-home-pay prediction.

Gross pay and estimated after-deduction pay

Gross pay is income before taxes, payroll contributions, benefits, and other deductions. When you enter a deduction rate, the calculator applies that percentage evenly to the gross estimate.

Estimated After-Deduction Pay = Gross Pay × (1 − Deduction Rate)

For example, $5,000 in monthly gross pay with a 25% deduction rate produces a simplified estimate of $3,750 after deductions. This is a budgeting shortcut, not an official take-home-pay calculation. A recent pay statement or official payroll calculator will usually provide a more accurate result.

United States salary conversion estimates

Select US to display annualized salary conversion estimates in USD. The calculator divides annual gross income by 52, 26, 24, or 12 to show average weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, or monthly amounts.

Biweekly schedules normally pay every two weeks, while semi-monthly schedules normally pay twice per month. This calculator compares the annualized averages; it does not model dated payroll periods, unpaid leave, overtime, or employer-specific payroll rules.

Example: $60,000 annual salary

  • Average weekly gross: approximately $1,153.85
  • Average biweekly gross: approximately $2,307.69
  • Average semi-monthly gross: $2,500
  • Average monthly gross: $5,000

Use these annualized averages to compare US job offers, convert between hourly and annual compensation, or create a starting point for monthly-expense planning.

The estimate does not calculate federal, state, or local income tax, Social Security, Medicare, benefits, retirement contributions, or employer-specific deductions.

Canadian salary conversion estimates

Select Canada to display annualized salary conversion estimates in CAD. The calculator divides annual gross income by 52, 26, 24, or 12 to show average weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, or monthly amounts.

Biweekly schedules generally pay every two weeks, while semi-monthly schedules pay twice per month. This calculator compares annualized averages; it does not model dated payroll periods, unpaid leave, overtime, or employer-specific payroll rules.

Example: C$60,000 annual salary

  • Average weekly gross: approximately C$1,153.85
  • Average biweekly gross: approximately C$2,307.69
  • Average semi-monthly gross: C$2,500
  • Average monthly gross: C$5,000

Use these annualized averages to compare Canadian job offers, convert an hourly wage into approximate annual compensation, or create a starting point for budgeting.

The estimate does not calculate federal, provincial, or territorial income tax, CPP or QPP contributions, EI or QPIP premiums, benefits, pensions, or employer-specific deductions.

Compare hourly and salaried jobs

Convert both offers to annual gross income using realistic weekly hours and working weeks. Then compare paid leave, overtime, bonuses, benefits, retirement or pension contributions, commute costs, and schedule stability.

Compare two job offers

Start with annual gross income so both offers use the same basis. Compare offers in the same currency. Switching the region changes the currency display but does not perform an exchange-rate conversion.

Plan rent and monthly expenses

Average monthly gross income is a useful starting point, but recurring bills should be compared with realistic after-deduction cash flow. This calculator does not predict the dates or exact amounts of employer-issued payments.

❓ Salary Calculator FAQ

How do I convert hourly pay into annual salary?

Multiply the hourly wage by hours worked per week and weeks worked per year. For example, $25 × 40 × 52 equals $52,000 in estimated annual gross income.

How do I calculate an hourly rate from annual salary?

Divide annual salary by annual working hours. A $52,000 salary divided by 2,080 hours is approximately $25 per hour.

What are the monthly and biweekly averages for a $60,000 salary?

A $60,000 annual salary has an annualized average of $5,000 per month or $2,307.69 per biweekly period before deductions. These are conversion averages, not exact payroll amounts.

Is biweekly pay the same as semi-monthly pay?

No. Biweekly schedules normally use 26 periods per year, while semi-monthly schedules use 24. This calculator shows annualized averages based on those divisors, not exact employer-issued payments.

Does the calculator show actual take-home pay?

No. It applies a user-entered percentage to gross pay for a rough after-deduction estimate. It does not determine actual taxes, statutory payroll contributions, benefits, or employer deductions.

Which US payroll items are not calculated?

The calculator does not separately calculate federal, state, or local income tax, Social Security, Medicare, benefits, retirement contributions, or employer-specific deductions.

Does switching between US and Canada convert currencies?

No. The selection controls whether salary estimates are displayed in USD or CAD. It does not perform a foreign-exchange conversion.

What if I work fewer than 52 weeks per year?

Enter the number of weeks you expect to work or be paid. For hourly work, fewer weeks reduce estimated annual income. For a fixed annual salary, working hours affect the hourly equivalent, while pay-period estimates remain based on the stated annual salary.

Method, official payroll tools, and review

FigureNorth converts gross income using 52 weekly, 26 biweekly, 24 semi-monthly, and 12 monthly periods. A biweekly payroll calendar can occasionally contain 27 paydays, so check your employer’s actual payroll schedule before budgeting. See the US Office of Personnel Management explanation of 26 or 27 pay dates for an official example of this calendar effect.

For tax and statutory payroll estimates, use the official IRS Tax Withholding Estimator in the United States or the Canada Revenue Agency payroll deductions tools.
