Commute Cost Calculator

Estimate how much driving to work costs per commute day, active commute week, average month, and year using fuel, parking, tolls, maintenance and wear, and other recurring expenses.

Enter your commute

Use your normal one-way distance and the number of weeks you actually expect to commute during the year.

Region & units

US uses miles, MPG, US gallons and USD. CA uses kilometres, L/100 km, litres and CAD. Switching region clears the current inputs; no currency or unit conversion is performed.

Quick answer

Your annual commute cost is the sum of estimated fuel, parking, tolls, maintenance and wear, and other recurring commute-day costs. The calculator then divides that annual total by your commute days, active commute weeks, and 12 months to show useful daily, weekly, and monthly averages.

How to use it

  1. 1. Enter your normal one-way commute distance.
  2. 2. Enter how many days per week and weeks per year you commute.
  3. 3. Add your vehicle fuel economy and current fuel price.
  4. 4. Add parking, tolls, maintenance and wear, and other recurring daily costs if applicable.
  5. 5. Review the annual total, daily/weekly/monthly averages, and cost breakdown.

How the commute cost is calculated

Round-trip distance = one-way distance × 2

Annual commute days = days/week × commute weeks/year

US fuel/day = round-trip miles ÷ MPG

Metric fuel/day = round-trip km × L/100 km ÷ 100

Annual commute cost = fuel + parking + tolls + maintenance & wear + other costs

Average monthly cost = annual commute cost ÷ 12

Worked example

A 15-mile one-way commute, 5 days per week for 48 weeks, at 30 MPG and $3.50 per gallon, with $8 daily parking, $2 daily tolls, $0.10 per mile for maintenance and wear, and $1 of other daily commute cost:

Annual commute cost

$4,200.00

Cost per commute day

$17.50

Average monthly cost

$350.00

The calculator returns an annual cost of $4,200.00, or $87.50 per active commute week, across 7,200 miles of annual commuting.

When to use this calculator

  • Estimate the annual cost of driving to work.
  • See how parking or tolls change your commute budget.
  • Compare a shorter commute with a longer one using your own inputs.
  • Estimate the effect of higher or lower fuel prices.
  • Adjust days per week to plan a hybrid work commute.
  • Budget for routine maintenance and wear caused by commuting.
  • Convert an annual commute cost into daily, weekly, and monthly averages.

What this estimate does not include

  • Live traffic, route, fuel-price, or map data.
  • Vehicle depreciation, loan or lease payments, insurance premiums, or registration.
  • Public-transit, rideshare, EV charging, or work-from-home comparisons.
  • The monetary value of commute time.
  • Automatic currency or unit conversion when switching regions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my commuting cost?

Enter your one-way commute distance, commuting schedule, fuel economy, fuel price, and any parking, toll, maintenance, or other daily costs. The calculator doubles the one-way distance for a round trip and estimates daily, weekly, monthly, and annual commuting costs.

How is fuel cost calculated for a US commute?

For US units, round-trip miles are divided by MPG to estimate gallons used per commute day. That fuel use is multiplied by the fuel price and annual commute days.

How is fuel cost calculated with L/100 km?

For metric units, round-trip kilometres are multiplied by L/100 km and divided by 100 to estimate litres used per commute day. The result is then multiplied by the fuel price per litre.

What does commute weeks per year mean?

Use the number of weeks you actually expect to commute during the year. For example, if you normally commute 5 days a week but take vacation or work remotely for part of the year, you can enter fewer than 52 weeks.

Should parking and tolls be entered per trip or per day?

Enter the total parking cost and total toll cost for one complete commute day. The calculator multiplies each amount by your annual number of commute days.

What should I include in maintenance and wear?

Use a per-mile or per-kilometre estimate for non-fuel routine maintenance and wear, such as tires and regular service. Do not include fuel again in this field.

What should I put in other cost per day?

Use it for another recurring daily commuting cost that is not already counted as fuel, parking, tolls, or maintenance and wear. Avoid entering the same expense twice.

Why is monthly commute cost calculated from the annual total?

The calculator divides the annual commute cost by 12 to show an average calendar-month cost. This is more consistent than assuming every month contains exactly four commute weeks.

What does cost per commute week mean?

It is the annual commute cost divided by the number of weeks you actually commute. It represents an average active commute week, not an average across all 52 calendar weeks.

Does this calculator include vehicle depreciation, insurance, or loan payments?

No. V1 focuses on fuel, parking, tolls, user-entered maintenance and wear, and other recurring commute-day costs. Vehicle depreciation, insurance premiums, financing, registration, and the value of your time are outside this estimate.
