📘 How the Pomodoro Timer Works

A Pomodoro timer alternates focused work sessions with scheduled breaks instead of running a single countdown. Start a focus timer, take a short break when it finishes, then repeat. After the selected number of completed focus sessions, take a long break.

This online work and break timer starts with a 25-minute focus interval and a 5-minute break, often followed by a 15–30 minute longer break. You can customize the timing; no single interval is universally best.

🎯 How Does the 25/5 Pomodoro Timer Work?

  1. 1. Use the 25-minute focus timer.
  2. 2. Take a 5-minute break.
  3. 3. Repeat the focus-and-break sequence.
  4. 4. After four completed focus sessions, take a longer break. This timer defaults to 15 minutes.

💡 Worked Example

Here is one classic 25/5 Pomodoro cycle starting at 09:00:

  • 09:00–09:25 Focus · 09:25–09:30 Short Break
  • 09:30–09:55 Focus · 09:55–10:00 Short Break
  • 10:00–10:25 Focus · 10:25–10:30 Short Break
  • 10:30–10:55 Focus · 10:55–11:10 Long Break

That is 100 minutes of focused time. The full clock-time span also includes breaks.

⏱️ 25/5 or 50/10 Pomodoro Timer?

25/5

Focus for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute short break. This is the classic rhythm for users who prefer shorter work intervals.

50/10

Focus for 50 minutes, then take a 10-minute break. Some users choose this longer custom rhythm for reading, coding, writing, or study blocks; it is not necessarily better than 25/5.

Custom

Set focus from 1–180 minutes, short breaks from 1–60, and long breaks from 1–120. There is no separate 50/10 preset button: enter 50 and 10 in Timer Settings.

You can use this focus timer for studying or other single-task work. For distraction-free sessions, use full-screen mode, choose Bell, Wood, or Chime as an end-of-session sound, adjust the volume, or enable optional browser notifications. Test sound and keyboard shortcuts are also available.

The countdown is anchored to a target end time, so browser tab throttling does not make the timer itself run slower. Keep the page and browser available: alerts depend on browser audio and notification permissions, and closing the environment may prevent an alert. The timer tracks completed focus time, not task quality; skipped or reset stages do not count.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Pomodoro timer?

A Pomodoro timer alternates focused work sessions with scheduled breaks. The familiar pattern uses 25 minutes of focus, a short break, and a longer break after several completed sessions. This timer also lets you change those lengths.

How does a 25/5 Pomodoro timer work?

It runs a 25-minute focus session followed by a 5-minute short break. Repeat that sequence, then take a longer break after the selected number of completed focus sessions. The default is four sessions.

How long should a Pomodoro break be?

The classic pattern uses a 5-minute short break and a longer break after several focus sessions. This timer defaults to a 15-minute long break. Set either break duration to fit your schedule.

How many Pomodoros should I do before a long break?

The default cycle includes four completed focus sessions before a long break. You can set the long-break interval from 1 to 12 sessions. Skipped focus sessions do not count toward the cycle.

Can I customize the Pomodoro timer?

Yes. Set focus, short-break, and long-break minutes in Timer Settings. An idle session updates immediately; a running or paused session keeps its current length, and the new setting applies to the next session of that type.

Can I use this as a study timer?

Yes. Use the focus and break cycle for reading, revision, writing, or other single-task study blocks. Choose intervals that suit the task; the timer does not measure learning outcomes.

Can I use a 50/10 Pomodoro timer instead of 25/5?

Yes. Enter 50 focus minutes and 10 short-break minutes in Timer Settings. There is no separate 50/10 preset button, and this longer custom rhythm is not inherently better than 25/5.

Does the Pomodoro timer keep running in another browser tab?

Yes. The countdown uses a target end time, so background tab throttling does not make the timer itself run slower. Keep the page and browser available; sound and notifications still depend on browser permissions and behavior.

Does this Pomodoro timer have sound, alarms, and full-screen mode?

Yes. Choose Bell, Wood, or Chime for an end-of-session sound, adjust its volume, and test it with a click. Full-screen mode is available in supporting browsers, while background notifications are optional and require permission.

Is this Pomodoro timer free, and do I need to sign up?

It is free to use and requires no account or sign-up. Settings and today's session totals are stored locally in your browser. Clearing site data removes them.
