Work Hours Calculator

Calculate net work time from a start time, end time, and unpaid break. Overnight shifts and optional weekly totals are handled without converting the calculation to rounded decimal hours.

🕒 Shift Details

Enter one shift. An end time earlier than the start time is treated as the following day.

Leave Break Duration empty for no break. Leave Days Worked empty when you only need the daily result.

🧭 How It Works

  1. 1. Convert the start and end times to minutes after midnight.
  2. 2. Find the gross elapsed time, including a midnight crossing when needed.
  3. 3. Subtract the entered unpaid break from the gross duration.
  4. 4. Convert net minutes to decimal hours and, when requested, a weekly total.

🧮 Formula

Gross Work Time = End Time − Start Time

Net Work Time = Gross Work Time − Break Time

Decimal Hours = Net Work Minutes ÷ 60

Weekly Work Time = Net Work Time × Days Worked

🌙 Cross-Midnight Shifts

If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats the end time as occurring on the following day. For example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is eight gross hours.

Start Time equal to End Time is treated as 0 hours, not a 24-hour shift.

🔢 Decimal Hours

Decimal hours are calculated from the exact net minute total. The display uses two decimal places, but rounded display values are never reused in daily or weekly calculations.

Common conversions include 15 minutes = 0.25 hour, 30 minutes = 0.50 hour, and 45 minutes = 0.75 hour.

Enter the shift start and end times. The calculator finds the elapsed time, handles an end time on the following day when needed, and subtracts any unpaid break you enter.
