🧮 How the Unit Price Calculator Works
A unit price shows how much a product costs for one standardized item or measurement. The calculator converts count to items, weight to grams, and volume to milliliters before comparing the two products.
It then divides each product’s total price by its standardized total quantity and identifies the lower comparable unit price. You can compare products sold by count, weight, or volume, including items, milligrams, grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds, milliliters, liters, US fluid ounces, pints, quarts, and gallons.

- Total quantity: Package size × Number of packages
- Unit price: Total price ÷ Standardized total quantity
- Savings percentage: Unit-price difference ÷ Higher unit price × 100
The calculator compares full-precision standardized prices. Display rounding is applied only after the comparison, so changing the displayed unit does not change which product is the better value.

Suppose Product A costs $6 for 12 ounces and Product B costs $8 for 20 ounces. Product A costs $0.50 per ounce, while Product B costs $0.40 per ounce.

$8 ÷ 20 oz = $0.40 per oz
Product B has the lower unit price. The savings percentage is:
($0.50 − $0.40) ÷ $0.50 × 100 = 20%
Product B is therefore 20% cheaper per ounce than Product A.

Grocery price comparison is easier when products are converted to the same cost per item, weight, or volume. A lower shelf price does not always mean a better deal when package sizes are different.

Unit price is only one part of the buying decision. Also consider product quality, expiration dates, storage space, and whether you will use the full quantity.
🏆 What Does “Best Unit Price” Mean?
The best unit price is the lower cost for the same standardized quantity. For example, a product with a lower price per ounce is a better value than one with a higher price per ounce, even when their package prices and package sizes are different.
Switching the comparison display from ounces to pounds, or from milliliters to liters, changes only how the price is shown. It does not change the winning product.
⚠️ Important Comparison Assumptions
Count mode assumes that every item is identical. Do not treat unlike objects such as rolls, sheets, servings, and individual pieces as interchangeable.
Weight and volume are different measurement types. A product sold by weight cannot be directly compared with one sold by volume unless its density is known.
Taxes, coupons, loyalty rewards, shipping charges, product quality, and other differences are not included unless they are already reflected in the prices you enter.
Equivalent savings is calculated using the smaller standardized total quantity of the two products. This avoids assuming that both packages contain the same amount.

🌎 Unit Price Comparisons in the US and Canada
Product labels in the United States commonly use ounces, pounds, fluid ounces, pints, quarts, gallons, and item counts. Canadian packaging often uses grams, kilograms, milliliters, and liters, although some products may also display ounces or pounds.

Count mode compares the price per individual item. It should only be used when the items being compared are equivalent, such as identical rolls, bottles, batteries, pods, or pieces.
📦 How are multipacks calculated?
The calculator multiplies the size of one package by the number of packages to find the total quantity. It then divides the total multipack price by that standardized quantity.
