Mulch Calculator

How much mulch do you need? Estimate coverage for one or more garden beds, calculate whole bags or bulk cubic yards, and plan material costs using US or Canadian units.

Your mulch project

Region

Enter 1–20 areas. A single depth and allowance apply to the whole project. Switching region resets all project inputs (no unit or currency conversion).

Results update as you enter valid dimensions and purchase details.

Enter at least one garden area to see your estimate.

How the calculation works

Add the individual areas and multiply by one shared mulch depth to find the base volume. Apply the selected allowance to get the adjusted required volume. US bulk volume uses cubic yards; Canadian bulk volume uses cubic metres. 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. Bag counts and bulk purchase increments round upward; purchased volume minus adjusted required volume is the surplus. Estimated material cost uses the purchased quantity and your unit price.

CalculationFormula
RectangleArea = length × width
CircleArea = π × (diameter ÷ 2)²
Tree ringArea = π × (outer diameter² − inner diameter²) ÷ 4
Mulch volumeBase volume = total area × depth
Extra allowanceAdjusted volume = base volume × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Whole bagsBags = ceiling(adjusted volume ÷ bag volume)
Bulk orderPurchase units = ceiling(required bulk units ÷ increment) × increment
Material costPurchase quantity × user-entered unit price

Worked example — US garden bed

A 10 ft × 12 ft rectangle has an area of 120 ft². Depth of 3 inches = 0.25 ft, so base volume is 30 ft³. Add 10% allowance for an adjusted requirement of 33 ft³. Required bulk volume is 33 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.22 yd³; 1.22 is an explanatory display value only, and the engine uses the unrounded quantity for purchasing. With 2 ft³ bags at $5 each, buy 17 bags for $85, leaving 1 ft³ surplus. With 0.5 yd³ bulk increments, buy 1.5 yd³ for $60 ($40 per yd³ × 1.5 = $60), leaving 7.5 ft³ surplus.

Assumptions: one depth and allowance for all areas; uniform coverage; estimated material cost only. The model does not calculate density, compaction, slopes, taxes, delivery, labor, live prices or supplier-specific order minimums. Confirm your chosen depth with the material and plant guidance relevant to your project.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much mulch I need?

Enter the dimensions of each garden area, your chosen mulch depth and an optional allowance. The calculator combines the areas, calculates volume, then estimates whole bags or a bulk quantity.

Can I calculate mulch for several garden beds?

Yes. Add up to 20 rectangular, circular, tree-ring or custom-area sections. All sections use the same mulch depth and allowance in this version.

How is a tree ring calculated?

The calculator subtracts the area of the inner circle from the outer circle. Enter outer and inner diameters using the same units; the inner diameter cannot exceed the outer diameter.

How many bags of mulch should I buy?

Divide the adjusted required volume by bag capacity, then round up to a whole bag. One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet: it takes 14 bags of 2 cubic feet each or 9 bags of 3 cubic feet each to cover that volume. For larger projects, use the total volume before rounding the final bag count. Choose US 1.5, 2 or 3 ft³ bags, Canadian 40, 50 or 56 L bags, or a custom positive capacity.

How many cubic yards of mulch do I need?

In US mode, required cubic yards = adjusted required cubic feet ÷ 27. Round that unrounded quantity upward to your selected 0.25, 0.5 or 1 yd³ bulk purchase increment. The increment is only a planning assumption; suppliers may use different ordering rules. Canadian bulk quantities use cubic metres, which are not interchangeable with cubic yards.

How does the extra allowance work?

An allowance from 0% to 30% increases the estimated required volume. The default is 10%. It is a user-controlled planning margin, not a guarantee about waste, settling or compaction.

How much area does one cubic yard of mulch cover?

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. Before adding extra allowance, it covers 162 square feet at 2 inches deep, 108 square feet at 3 inches deep, or 81 square feet at 4 inches deep. Actual coverage depends on the depth you enter.

Can I calculate in Canadian units?

Yes. Choose Canada to use metres, square metres, centimetres, litres and cubic metres with CAD prices. Switching regions clears the current project; there is no currency conversion.

Does the estimated cost include delivery or labor?

No. Enter your own price per bag or bulk volume unit. The result is an estimated material cost and excludes taxes, delivery, labor, retailer discounts and supplier-specific fees.

Does the calculator account for mulch settling or a sloped yard?

No. The volume assumes a uniform stated depth over flat measured areas. Material density, compaction, slopes, decomposition and future replenishment are not modeled.

Disclaimer: Results are planning estimates, not a professional landscaping measurement or supplier quote. Prices are entered by the user and do not include taxes, delivery or labor.
