Area With Waste: Base Area × (1 + Waste Percentage ÷ 100)

Start with room square footage
Enter the room length and width in feet. The calculator multiplies the room area by the number of rooms to estimate the base flooring area in square feet.
Add a waste allowance
Use about 10% for many carpet and flooring projects. Complex room shapes, closets, hallways, seams, and patterned materials may require a higher waste percentage.
Use price per square foot
Enter the material price per square foot. If your carpet is quoted by the square yard, divide the square-yard price by 9 before entering it.
Review material and installation cost
Material cost is based on the area with waste, while installation cost is based on the actual base area. This helps avoid charging labor on extra material waste.
