๐Ÿ“˜ How It Works

A flooring and carpet calculator estimates the floor area, recommended material quantity, and project cost using room dimensions, identical room count, waste allowance, material price, and installation rate.

๐Ÿ“ Base Area: Length ร— Width ร— Number of Identical Rooms

โœ‚๏ธ Waste Allowance: Base Area ร— Waste Percentage รท 100

โž• Area With Waste: Base Area + Waste Allowance

๐Ÿ“ Square Yards: Area With Waste รท 9

๐Ÿ“ฆ Material Cost: Area With Waste ร— Material Price per sq ft

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Installation Cost: Base Area ร— Installation Cost per sq ft

๐Ÿ’ฐ Total Cost: Material Cost + Installation Cost

๐ŸŽฏ When to Use

  • ๐Ÿ  Estimate carpet or flooring for bedrooms, living rooms, offices, basements, and rental properties.
  • ๐Ÿ“ Calculate square footage for one room or multiple rooms with identical dimensions.
  • โœ‚๏ธ Add waste for cuts, seams, closets, hallways, and layout adjustments.
  • ๐Ÿ“ฆ Estimate material cost from a flooring or carpet price per square foot.
  • ๐Ÿ’ต Compare material, installation, and total project costs in USD or CAD.

๐Ÿงฎ Calculation Example

For two 12 ft ร— 15 ft rooms, the base area is 360 sq ft. With a 10% waste allowance, the recommended material quantity is 396 sq ft, equal to 44 sq yd.

๐Ÿ“‹ Assumptions and Costs Not Included

This estimate assumes rectangular rooms with identical dimensions when more than one room is selected. Material cost includes the selected waste allowance, while installation cost is calculated from the base floor area.

Taxes, delivery, underlay or padding, old-floor removal, disposal, subfloor preparation, stairs, baseboards, trims, and transitions are not included.

๐Ÿงฑ Flooring Planning Guide for US Projects

Start with room square footage

Enter the room length and width in feet. The calculator multiplies one roomโ€™s area by the number of identical rooms.

Add a waste allowance

Many carpet and flooring projects use 5โ€“10% waste. Complex shapes, closets, hallways, seams, and patterned materials may require 10โ€“20% or more.

Use price per square foot

Enter the material price per square foot. If carpet is quoted by the square yard, divide the square-yard price by 9 before entering it.

Review material and installation costs

Material cost uses the area with waste. Installation cost uses the actual base floor area and excludes extra material waste.

โ“ Flooring & Carpet Calculator FAQ

Multiply room length by room width and by the number of identical rooms, then add an appropriate waste allowance.

Does this calculator use USD?

Yes. In United States mode, material, installation, and total costs are labeled in USD.

Is installation calculated with waste?

No. Installation is calculated from the base floor area. Material cost is calculated from the area including waste.
