This calculator starts with the length and width of one rectangular room, then multiplies that area by the number of rooms entered. The room count is useful only when every included room has the same dimensions.
It produces an area-based flooring or carpet allowance. It does not choose a product, arrange boards or carpet seams, or convert the result into cartons, planks, tiles, or rolls.
The selected waste percentage is applied to the total base floor area. That additional area is included in the recommended material quantity and material cost.
Installation cost is calculated from the base floor area only. The calculator does not assume that an installer charges labour on every extra square foot reserved for cuts, seams, damage, or future repairs.
There is no coverage-per-box, coverage-per-carton, plank-size, tile-size, or roll-width input. The calculator therefore does not return a package count, purchased coverage, or extra coverage created by package rounding.
To prepare a purchase quantity, divide the recommended material area by the coverage printed on the selected package or roll and round up to the next complete purchase unit. Compare that purchased coverage with the recommended area separately.
The room multiplier repeats one length-and-width pair. Rooms with different dimensions should be calculated separately rather than combined through the identical-room field.
L-shaped rooms, hallways, closets, islands, columns, curved edges, and staircases are not modelled. Simple irregular floors can be divided into measurable rectangles, but seams and installation direction still require separate judgment.
Diagonal boards, herringbone, chevron, staggered joints, grain matching, carpet pattern repeats, seam placement, and board-direction optimisation are not calculation modes.
These choices can increase unusable offcuts or material demand. A higher waste percentage may provide a planning allowance, but it does not make the calculator simulate the chosen layout.
Material cost uses the user-entered price per square foot and the area including waste. Installation cost uses the user-entered installation rate and the base floor area. The estimated total is the sum of those two amounts.
The calculator does not add tax, delivery, minimum charges, demolition, disposal, subfloor repair, underlayment, padding, moisture barriers, adhesive, fasteners, transitions, baseboards, quarter round, stairs, or permit costs.
Final material use can change with room shape, cutting pattern, board direction, carpet seams, damaged pieces, pattern or grain matching, unusable offcuts, closet treatment, actual package coverage, and installer technique. The result is a planning area, not a product-specific takeoff.
Each example below calls the same calculateFlooringCarpet() function used by the interactive calculator. The results are generated from the production logic rather than entered as static totals.
Two 12 ft × 15 ft rooms use 10% waste, a material rate of $4.50 per sq ft, and an installation rate of $2.25 per sq ft.
The production result is 360 sq ft of base area and 396 sq ft after adding 36 sq ft of waste. Material is $1,782.00, installation is $810.00, and the estimated total is $2,592.00.
A 12 ft × 15 ft room uses 15% waste, a material rate of $3.80 per sq ft, and an installation rate of $2.00 per sq ft.
Base area remains 180 sq ft, while recommended material rises to 207 sq ft. The result is 23 sq yd, with material cost of $786.60 and installation cost of $360.00.
A 10 ft × 12 ft room in Canada mode uses 8% waste, CAD 5.25 per sq ft for material, and CAD 3.10 per sq ft for installation.
The production result is 120 sq ft of base area and 129.6 sq ft of recommended material. Material is CA$680.40, installation is CA$372.00, and the estimated total is CA$1,052.40. Canada mode changes currency formatting, not the area formula.
This estimate assumes rectangular rooms with identical dimensions when more than one room is selected. Material cost includes the selected waste allowance, while installation cost is calculated from the base floor area.
Taxes, delivery, underlay or padding, old-floor removal, disposal, subfloor preparation, stairs, baseboards, trims, and transitions are not included. Package, box, plank, tile, or roll coverage is not modeled, so confirm the product label and round up to complete purchase units separately.
