Wallpaper Calculator

Estimate complete wallpaper rolls, full-height strips, and optional paste packs for one wall, multiple same-height walls, or a room in US customary or Canadian metric units.

The roll estimate accounts for straight pattern repeat, total top-and-bottom trimming, and an additional strip allowance. Opening area reduces paste needs but not full-height strip count.

๐ŸŒŽ Region

๐Ÿ“ Wall Size

Enter the total length and consistent height of the wall area.

๐Ÿšช Doors, Windows & Openings

Enter the total area that does not need wallpaper.

Reduces net area and paste, but not full-height strip count.

๐Ÿงป Wallpaper Roll Details

Use the dimensions printed on the roll label.

๐ŸŽจ Pattern & Trimming

Straight-match repeat and total top-and-bottom trimming allowance.

โš ๏ธ Waste Allowance

Extra full strips for mistakes, damage, difficult cuts, and repairs.

Recommended Guidelines

โ€ข 10% โ€” Standard wallpaper projects

โ€ข 15% โ€” Corners, difficult cuts, or beginner DIY work

โ€ข 20% โ€” Complex rooms or additional repair material

๐Ÿชฃ Wallpaper Paste Coverage

Enter the coverage printed on one paste pack or bucket.

Leave blank for peel-and-stick wallpaper or when paste is not required.

What this calculator estimates

Calculate the full-width strips required across the wall, then determine how many full-height, pattern-matched strips fit in one roll. Divide the total strips by the usable strips per roll and round up to the next complete roll. Taller walls, larger repeats, and extra trimming can reduce the number of strips per roll.

๐Ÿ“˜ How It Works

Gross Wall Area = Total Wall Length ร— Consistent Wall Height

Net Wall Area = Gross Wall Area โˆ’ Entered Opening Area, with a minimum of zero

Cut Length = Wall Height + Total Trimming Allowance

Matched Length = Cut Length rounded up to the next straight pattern repeat

Strips Needed = Wall Length รท Roll Width, rounded up

Total Strips = Strips Needed ร— (1 + Additional Strip % รท 100), rounded up

Strips per Roll = Roll Length รท Matched Strip Length, rounded down

Rolls Needed = Total Strips รท Strips per Roll, rounded up

Paste Packs = Net Wall Area รท Label Coverage per Pack, rounded up when paste coverage is entered

๐ŸŽฏ When to Use

  • ๐Ÿงฑ Accent and feature walls
  • ๐Ÿ›๏ธ Bedrooms, nurseries, and living rooms
  • ๐Ÿšช Walls with doors and windows
  • ๐ŸŽจ Straight-match patterned wallpaper
  • ๐Ÿงป Traditional or peel-and-stick rolls
  • ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ US and ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Canadian projects

๐Ÿงฎ Worked Example Using the Production Formula

A 24 ft wall at 8 ft high uses 24 in wide wallpaper. With 4 in of total trimming and a 24 in straight repeat, each 100 in cut rounds up to a 10 ft matched drop. The wall requires 12 base strips.

A 10% allowance produces 14 total strips. A 40 ft roll supplies 4 matched strips, so the calculator returns 4 complete rolls. Subtracting 20 sq ft of openings leaves 172 sq ft for paste, or 2 packs at 100 sq ft per pack.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Wallpaper Planning Guide for US Projects

Use US customary units

Enter wall and roll lengths in feet, roll width, repeat, and trimming in inches, and opening or paste coverage in square feet.

Use one consistent wall height

Combine wall lengths only when the walls have the same height. Calculate different-height sections separately.

Check the roll label

Roll sizes, single-roll and double-roll packaging, panels, and product coverage vary by manufacturer.

Understand opening deductions

Door and window area reduces paste coverage, but exact strip savings require each openingโ€™s position, width, and height.

Buy from the same batch

Ordering an appropriate spare roll from the same dye lot can help with future repairs and colour consistency.

โ“ FAQ

Do doors and windows reduce the wallpaper roll count?

Door and window deductions reduce net wall area and the paste estimate, but they do not automatically reduce full-height strip or roll counts. The position and dimensions of each opening are needed to determine whether offcuts can be reused.

What is wallpaper pattern repeat?

Pattern repeat is the vertical distance before a design repeats. This calculator rounds each strip length up to the next complete straight-match repeat. Half-drop, offset, reverse-hang, and special matching layouts may require additional material.

Can I calculate wallpaper for a whole room?

Yes. Add the lengths of walls that share the same height and enter the combined length. Calculate different-height walls or sections separately.

Can I use it for peel-and-stick wallpaper?

Yes. Enter the product width and length as shown on its label. Paste may not be needed, so you can leave paste coverage blank.

Why does the calculator say the roll is too short?

The selected roll cannot produce one full-height strip after trimming and straight pattern matching. Check the roll length, wall height, trimming allowance, and repeat measurement.

What is a wallpaper double roll?

Single roll and double roll can describe packaging or pricing conventions rather than one universal physical size. Always enter the actual width and length printed on the product label.

Why should wallpaper rolls have the same batch number?

Different dye lots can have small colour or finish variations. Buying the required rolls together and checking the batch number can reduce visible differences.

Is the wallpaper estimate exact?

It is a planning estimate for walls of one consistent height. Actual requirements can change because of openings, corners, damaged material, batch matching, installation method, and whether offcuts can be reused.

Calculation Scope and Review

This calculator was reviewed against its production calculation logic on August 21, 2026. It estimates full-height strips for one wall or combined same-height walls, straight pattern repeat, trimming, an additional strip allowance, complete rolls, and optional paste packs. Opening area affects net area and paste only.

It does not model half-drop or offset matching, different wall heights in one run, corners, the position of openings, reusable offcuts, murals, panels, substrate preparation, labour, price, or exact installer layout. Confirm physical roll dimensions, match type, repeat, paste coverage, packaging, and dye lot on the product label. Consult an experienced wallpaper installer for complex or high-value projects.
