Quick Answer

A practical parrot housing estimate should account for both wingspan and usable floor area. This calculator uses at least 1.5× wingspan for minimum width or 2× for recommended width, keeps depth at least one wingspan, and then checks the result against a body-size floor-area baseline.

🧮 How the Calculator Works

The calculator first converts measurements to centimetres. It then finds the body-length size group, calculates the target floor area, applies the selected wingspan rule, and expands depth when needed so the final floor area reaches the target.

Species presets provide typical starting measurements for the same 12 parrots supported by FigureNorth's Parrot Age Calculator. They do not override measurements you enter yourself.

Minimum width = max(1.5 × wingspan, shortest-side baseline)

Recommended width = max(2.0 × wingspan, shortest-side baseline)

Depth = max(wingspan, shortest-side baseline, target area ÷ width)

Height = max(size-group minimum height, 2 × body length)

For more than one bird, the size-group table adds floor area for each additional bird. Recommended mode then applies a 1.25× FigureNorth planning buffer to the resulting target floor area.

🏠 Cage, Play Stand, or Bird Room?

Housing style changes with species, household setup, and the amount of safe supervised activity available. Smaller parrots may spend more of their indoor time in a well-designed cage, while larger parrots are often managed with a cage plus play stands, climbing structures, bird-safe rooms, or aviary-style spaces.

The calculator never reduces the wingspan or floor-area baseline just because a bird spends more time outside the enclosure. The result should be treated as one part of the bird's overall movement and enrichment environment.

The body-length floor-area table is based on the grouped minimum enclosure data published by Bird Cage Calculator from Finnish companion-bird guidance. FigureNorth combines those constraints with measured wingspan and body length rather than using a single fixed cage size by species.

How is parrot cage size calculated?

The calculator combines your parrot's measured body length and wingspan with a body-size floor-area table. Width is constrained by wingspan, depth must be at least one wingspan, and the calculated floor area cannot fall below the selected size-group target.

Why does wingspan matter?

A parrot needs usable horizontal space to open and move its wings. The minimum planning width uses 1.5 times wingspan, while the recommended option uses 2 times wingspan. Depth never falls below one full wingspan.

Does a large parrot need to stay in a cage all day?

No. African greys, Amazons, macaws, and other parrots may use a cage together with play stands, bird-safe rooms, supervised out-of-cage time, or aviary-style spaces. This result is a housing and safe-resting-space planning baseline, not a recommendation for full-time confinement.

Should I use my bird's actual measurements?

Yes. Species presets are reference starting points, but individual birds vary. If you know the adult body length and wingspan of your bird, use those measurements because the calculator gives them priority in the final result.

Can I calculate space for more than one bird?

Yes. The calculator can add floor-area allowance for additional birds, but a larger enclosure does not mean two birds are behaviorally compatible. Species, sex, temperament, health, and individual history can affect whether shared housing is appropriate.

What is the difference between Minimum and Recommended?

Minimum uses the base size-group area and a 1.5-times-wingspan width rule. Recommended uses a 2-times-wingspan width rule and adds a 25% FigureNorth planning buffer to the target floor area. The 25% buffer is a planning assumption, not a legal or veterinary standard.

Does the result include space taken by perches and toys?

The result estimates enclosure dimensions, but usable space can be reduced by large perches, feeding stations, toys, swings, and other furnishings. Avoid overcrowding the enclosure and keep enough clear room for safe movement.
