🧮 How the Calculator Works

The calculator converts the entered adult length to centimetres, selects the habitat profile for the chosen species, calculates the applicable body-size rule, and then compares that rule with the species baseline.

For standard species, length, width, and height are each resolved separately using the larger of the baseline and dynamic rule. This avoids treating enclosure volume as a substitute for adequate floor space or climbing height.

L = expected adult total length. For terrestrial lizards, the dynamic rule acts as a body-size guard and does not replace a larger species-specific baseline.

🏡 Green Iguana Special Rule

Green Iguana uses a separate large-reptile rule. Minimum dimensions are the larger of a 300 × 150 × 180 cm walk-in baseline and a dynamic rule of 2L × 1L × max(1.2L, 180 cm).

Recommended mode first resolves that minimum and then applies one FigureNorth planning buffer: 1.20× length, 1.20× width, and 1.10× height. This buffer is a planning assumption, not a legal or veterinary requirement.

Several species baselines in this model use published quick-reference enclosure dimensions from Brit Exotics. FigureNorth then compares those species baselines with explicit adult-length rules so unusually large animals are not forced into a smaller fixed baseline.

How is reptile enclosure size calculated?

The calculator combines the selected species profile with the reptile's expected adult total length. For most species, the final length, width, and height are resolved dimension by dimension using the larger of the species baseline and the applicable body-size rule.

Why should I enter expected adult length instead of current length?

A juvenile reptile may be much smaller than its eventual adult size. This calculator plans around expected adult total length so the result is not based only on a temporary juvenile measurement.

Why do arboreal reptiles get taller enclosure results?

Arboreal profiles prioritize height because climbing space is a major part of the usable environment. Terrestrial profiles place more emphasis on floor space, while Common Boa uses a combined floor-and-height priority.

How does the calculator size snake enclosures?

Terrestrial snakes use adult length as the main body-size reference. Minimum mode uses a dynamic rule of 1.0× length by 0.5× length by 0.5× length, while recommended mode increases enclosure length to 1.5× adult length for terrestrial snake profiles.

What is the difference between Minimum and Recommended?

Minimum uses the minimum species baseline and minimum body-size rule. Recommended uses a recommended species baseline where one exists together with the recommended body-size rule. Green Iguana uses a separate FigureNorth planning buffer applied once to the resolved minimum dimensions.

Why is the Green Iguana result so large?

Adult Green Iguanas are large arboreal reptiles. The calculator uses a large walk-in minimum baseline of 300 × 150 × 180 cm and compares it with an adult-size rule before applying any recommended planning buffer.

Does enclosure volume determine whether a habitat is suitable?

No. Volume is shown only as an auxiliary figure. Suitability depends on the actual length, width, height, habitat profile, usable floor area, climbing structure, environmental gradients, furnishings, and species-specific husbandry needs.

Is this calculator a veterinary or legal enclosure standard?

No. It is a planning tool. Local animal-welfare rules, current husbandry guidance, sex, locality, individual size, mobility, furnishings, temperature and humidity requirements, and other species-specific needs can justify a larger or differently configured enclosure.
