Calculate pace
Use distance and elapsed time to calculate average pace.
Calculate running pace, finish time, or distance for 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, and custom runs. Compare pace per mile and per kilometer, average speed, and mile or kilometer splits.
Enter a target finish time to find the average pace required, or enter a pace to calculate a same-pace finish time. Race times are mathematical estimates, not predictions of actual performance.
Choose the default distance, pace, and split units. Switching regions clears the entered values.
Choose which one of pace, finish time, or distance the calculator should solve.
Choose a common race distance or enter your own distance.
Enter the total running time. Leave unused leading fields blank or enter 0.
Choose whether the result table should show mile or kilometer splits at the calculated average pace.
The calculator uses the exact conversion 1 mile = 1.609344 km. Pace, time, and distance are calculated mathematically; no fitness, fatigue, terrain, weather, or elevation model is applied.
A running pace calculator uses any two of distance, elapsed time, and pace to calculate the third. It can also convert between min/mile and min/km, show average speed, and generate mile or kilometer splits.
Running pace, elapsed time, and distance are directly related. If any two are known, the third can be calculated. FigureNorth uses seconds and kilometers internally, then converts the result to both metric and imperial running units.
Use distance and elapsed time to calculate average pace.
Use a target pace and distance to calculate a same-pace finish time.
Use elapsed time and average pace to calculate distance covered.
To convert min/mile to min/km, first express the pace in seconds: seconds per km = seconds per mile ÷ 1.609344. For the reverse, seconds per mile = seconds per km × 1.609344. The exact distance relationship is 1 mile = 1.609344 km.
Select 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, or a custom distance, then enter a target finish time to calculate the average pace required. Enter a pace instead to calculate the same-pace finish time.

These are constant-average-pace calculations, not predictions that a runner can sustain the pace. Displayed paces are rounded to the nearest tenth of a second; the calculator retains unrounded values.
Compare pace per kilometer with pace per mile and equivalent speed in km/h and mph. This chart uses the exact conversion 1 mile = 1.609344 km.
| min/km | min/mile | km/h | mph |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4:00 | 6:26.2 | 15 | 9.32 |
| 4:30 | 7:14.5 | 13.33 | 8.28 |
| 5:00 | 8:02.8 | 12 | 7.46 |
| 5:30 | 8:51.1 | 10.91 | 6.78 |
| 6:00 | 9:39.4 | 10 | 6.21 |
| 6:30 | 10:27.6 | 9.23 | 5.74 |
| 7:00 | 11:15.9 | 8.57 | 5.33 |
Pace is displayed to the nearest tenth of a second and speed to two decimal places. Rounding is for display only.
25 minutes ÷ 5 kilometers = 5 minutes per kilometer.
A constant 5:00/km pace over 10 kilometers gives a 50-minute finish time.
One hour contains 7.5 eight-minute miles.
This is a constant-pace calculation and does not model fatigue or race conditions.
Pace tells you how much time it takes to cover one mile or one kilometer. A lower time per mile or kilometer means a faster average pace. Runners commonly use pace for workouts and race planning because it maps directly to split times.
Speed tells you how much distance is covered per hour. The same run can be described as 8:00 per mile or 7.5 mph. FigureNorth shows both mph and km/h so the speed result can help compare an outdoor pace with a treadmill speed setting. It does not verify treadmill calibration or model incline or effort.
The preset buttons use fixed standard distances. You can always choose Custom for a training route, track workout, trail run, or another race length.
| Distance | Kilometers | Miles |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mile | 1.6093 km | 1 mi |
| 5K | 5 km | 3.1069 mi |
| 10K | 10 km | 6.2137 mi |
| 10 Mile | 16.0934 km | 10 mi |
| Half Marathon | 21.0975 km | 13.1094 mi |
| Marathon | 42.195 km | 26.2188 mi |
Same-pace race times and splits assume one constant average pace from start to finish. They are mathematical planning values, not a model of how pace changes during a real run.
The calculator does not use fatigue curves, prior race results, age grading, VO2 max, heart rate, training history, or Riegel prediction. Longer-distance results therefore should not be read as performance forecasts.
Elevation, hills, trail surface, wind, heat, humidity, altitude, and treadmill calibration are outside this calculation.
Input limits are used to prevent invalid or impractically large calculations. They are not statements about what counts as a normal, safe, or recommended running pace.
World Athletics publishes the Competition and Technical Rules used for road-running standards, including recognized road-race distances.

A running pace calculator converts between distance, elapsed time, and average pace. FigureNorth can calculate pace from distance and time, estimate finish time from distance and pace, or calculate distance from time and pace.
Divide elapsed time by distance. For example, a 25-minute 5K equals 5:00 per kilometer. The calculator also converts that result to pace per mile and average speed in both km/h and mph.
Choose Calculate pace, select 5K or 10K, and enter your target finish time. A 25-minute 5K or a 50-minute 10K requires an average pace of 5:00 per kilometer. To calculate finish time instead, enter the distance and pace. These are constant-average-pace calculations, not performance predictions.
Select Half Marathon (21.0975 km) or Marathon (42.195 km) in Calculate pace mode and enter your goal finish time. Divide that time by the selected distance to find the required average pace. Calculate finish time reverses the process using distance and pace. The Common Race Goal Paces table includes 1:45 and 2:00 half marathons and 3:30 and 4:00 marathons.
The calculator converts pace using the exact relationship 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers. A pace in seconds per mile is divided by 1.609344 to obtain seconds per kilometer; the reverse conversion multiplies by 1.609344.
Pace is time required to cover a unit of distance, such as 8:00 per mile. Speed is distance covered per unit of time, such as 7.5 mph. They describe the same movement from opposite directions.
Splits show the time for successive mile or kilometer segments. FigureNorth uses the calculated average pace to build constant-pace splits and includes a final partial segment when the distance is not an exact whole number of miles or kilometers.
Yes. Choose Calculate distance and enter elapsed time plus your pace per mile or per kilometer. The calculator returns distance in both miles and kilometers along with equivalent pace and speed.
No. They are constant-pace mathematical extrapolations. They show what common race distances would take at the same average pace, without modeling fatigue, fitness, terrain, weather, elevation, or race-day conditions.
No. US and Canada use identical math. The region setting only changes the default distance, pace, and split units: miles and min/mile for US, kilometers and min/km for Canada.
