Road Trip Time Calculator

Estimate driving time with planned stops, total road trip duration, and an optional arrival time from your trip distance and expected average driving speed.

🚗 Trip Details

Choose US or CA units, then enter distance and an expected average driving speed. Planned breaks and departure time are optional.

Region / Units

Switching region clears distance and speed so the same numbers are not reinterpreted in different units.

Break count controls whether stop time is added. If the number of breaks is zero or blank, break duration does not add time.

Road trip time disclaimer: This calculator provides a planning estimate from the distance, average speed, and break time you enter. It does not use live route, traffic, construction, weather, road-closure, fuel, charging, toll, or legal driving-limit data.

⚡ Quick Answer

Road trip time equals distance divided by average driving speed, plus the time planned for stops. If you enter a departure time, the calculator adds the total duration to estimate your arrival time (ETA).

🧭 How It Works

  1. 1. Divide trip distance by average driving speed.
  2. 2. Convert the driving duration into time.
  3. 3. Add the number of planned stops multiplied by minutes per stop.
  4. 4. If a departure time is entered, add the rounded trip duration to estimate arrival time.

🧮 Formula

Driving Time = Distance ÷ Average Speed

Break Time = Number of Breaks × Break Duration

Total Trip Time = Driving Time + Break Time

Arrival Time = Departure Time + Total Trip Time

🛣️ Choosing an Average Driving Speed

Average speed should represent the trip-wide moving average, not the posted speed limit or only the fastest highway segment. Local roads, congestion, construction, slower sections, and urban driving can lower the actual average.

The calculator does not estimate average speed for you. Use a planning value that fits the route and conditions you expect.

🌙 Arrival Time and Multi-Day Trips

When you enter a departure time, the total trip duration is rounded to the nearest minute before the arrival clock time is calculated.

Trips that pass midnight show a day offset such as “Next day” or “+2 days,” so the clock time is not mistaken for a same-day arrival.

📋 Common Road Trip Time Examples

DistanceAverage SpeedPlanned BreaksTotal Trip Time
100 mi50 mph0 min2 hr
200 mi50 mph30 min4 hr 30 min
300 mi60 mph90 min6 hr 30 min
500 km100 km/h30 min5 hr 30 min

Planned stop time is added after driving time; it does not change the average driving speed you enter. These are arithmetic examples only. Actual road-trip time can differ because traffic, weather, road conditions, construction, and route choices are not included automatically.

🎯 When to Use This Calculator

  • Use this drive time calculator when you already know the trip distance.
  • Add planned meal, fuel, or rest stops.
  • Compare trip time at different average speeds.
  • Estimate an arrival time from a departure time.
  • Plan a trip that crosses midnight or lasts multiple days.
  • Compare US mile/mph and Canadian kilometre/km/h planning.

🧪 Worked Examples

These examples use the same calculation rules as the interactive calculator.

Example 1

Region:
US
Distance:
300 mi
Average speed:
60 mph
Driving time:
5 hr
Break time:
30 min
Total:
5 hr 30 min
Estimated arrival:
13:30 (Same day)

Example 2

Region:
CA
Distance:
500 km
Average speed:
100 km/h
Driving time:
5 hr
Break time:

Example 3

Region:
US
Distance:
315 mi
Average speed:
60 mph
Driving time:
5 hr 15 min
Break time:
30 min
Total:
5 hr 45 min
Estimated arrival:

⚠️ Assumptions and Limits

  • Distance and average speed must use the same unit system.
  • Planned break time is added only from the stop values you enter.
  • Break count is not recommended or generated automatically.
  • Arrival time is based on total trip duration rounded to the nearest minute.
  • Live traffic, construction, weather, road closures, and route changes are not included.
  • Fuel cost, tolls, EV charging, hotels, and multi-leg route planning are outside this calculator.
  • Results are planning estimates, not navigation or driving-safety instructions.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate road trip time?

Enter the trip distance and your expected average driving speed. The calculator divides distance by speed, then adds any planned stop time.

What average speed should I enter?

Use a realistic trip-wide driving average, not just the posted highway speed. Slower roads, congestion, construction, and local driving can reduce your actual average.

How are breaks included?

Enter the number of planned stops and the minutes per stop. Total break time is the number of stops multiplied by the break duration.

Can this calculator estimate arrival time?

Yes. Add an optional departure time and the calculator will add the rounded total trip duration to estimate an arrival clock time and any next-day offset.

Does it handle trips that cross midnight?

Yes. If the trip extends past midnight, the result shows the arrival time together with the number of days after departure.

Can I use miles and mph?

Yes. Select US to enter distance in miles and average speed in miles per hour.

Can I use kilometres and km/h?

Yes. Select CA to enter distance in kilometres and average speed in kilometres per hour.

Does this calculator include traffic, weather, fuel, or tolls?

No. It is a planning estimate based on the distance, average speed, and break time you enter. It does not use live traffic, weather, route, fuel, charging, or toll data.
