Estimate kitchen or bathroom countertop replacement costs from surface area, material and region. Compare installed reference prices or use your own contractor quote.
Estimate disclaimer
Estimate disclaimer: This tool provides a preliminary planning budget, not an offer or contractor quote. Reference price ranges are broad and may not reflect your city or project. Confirm measurements, inclusions, tax treatment and final pricing with a local professional.
How to use this countertop calculator
- Select 🇺🇸 US or 🇨🇦 CA, your room and countertop material.
- Enter the countertop surface area. Or switch to length × depth and add separate non-overlapping rectangles for an island or L-shaped layout.
- Press Calculate estimate to view a material-and-standard-installation reference range.
- For your own contractor pricing, open Advanced Options. Choose unit-price or fixed-project quote; only enter extras that are not already included.
Countertop cost formula
In reference mode, the estimate uses the installed-price range for the selected material and region:
For rectangle measurements, calculate each non-overlapping section’s length × depth, then add the areas. US dimensions entered in inches are divided by 144 to obtain square feet. Canadian dimensions entered in centimeters are converted to square meters and then to square feet for the price lookup.
Confirmed separately billed extras are added once. Additional tax is calculated only for explicitly taxable, tax-exclusive amounts. Optional contingency uses the subtotal before additional tax, provided none of its amounts already contain unknown embedded tax.
When is this calculator useful?
Use this kitchen countertop cost calculator to compare quartz, granite, laminate or butcher block before requesting quotes. It also estimates bathroom countertop replacement costs from the same surface-area and pricing rules; choosing Bathroom does not change the price per square foot.
Reference installed prices include material and normal installation. Add removal, extra cutouts, upgraded edges or other costs only after confirming that they are separately billed. Reference ranges are planning estimates, not live local contractor quotes.
| Material | US USD/sq ft | CA CAD/sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Quartz | 59–130 | 55–155 |
| Granite | 43–140 | 40–150 |
| Laminate | 19–45 | 20–80 |
| Butcher block | 50–100 | 30–150 |
US prices are in USD and Canadian prices are in CAD. Both columns use square feet; Canadian users can enter m², which the calculator converts to square feet without converting currencies. Sources: The Home Depot (US) and HomeStars (Canada). Reference verification dates: 2026-10-30.
Example: US quartz countertop cost for 40 square feet. The Reference Installed base estimate is $2,360.00 – $5,200.00 USD, before separately billed extras or additional tax and with no contingency. Actual quotes depend on project scope and location.
The calculator estimates countertop surface cost, not a full kitchen remodel. Sink purchases, cabinets, plumbing, electrical work, structural changes and other work are outside the standard installed reference price unless a specific separately billed charge is entered.
Countertop calculator FAQ
How much do quartz countertops cost per square foot installed?
The quartz reference range is $59.00 – $130.00 USD per sq ft in the US and $55.00 – $155.00 CAD per sq ft in Canada. It covers material and normal installation; a local quote may differ.
How do I calculate countertop square footage, including an L-shape?
For each rectangular section, multiply length by depth in inches and divide by 144. Split an L-shape into two non-overlapping rectangles and add any separate island. Canadian measurements use centimeters; the calculator converts the combined surface area to square feet.
Does the reference price include installation?
Yes. The reference range includes material and normal installation. Do not add a second standard installation charge.
Can I estimate countertop replacement costs in Canada?
Yes. Select 🇨🇦 CA for Canadian-dollar reference pricing and square-meter input. The table's Canadian prices remain CAD per square foot. These are separate Canadian reference ranges, not US prices converted to CAD.
Should I subtract the area of my sink?
No. The estimate uses gross countertop surface area. Cutouts are not automatically deducted from material purchasing or fabrication costs.
Can I calculate material costs only?
Yes. Use your own price in Advanced Options and choose Materials only. Without an installation quote, the result is explicitly a materials-only budget.
Why can't I add a contingency to a tax-inclusive quote?
This calculator applies contingency to pre-tax costs. Without knowing the embedded tax breakdown, that base cannot be established accurately, so contingency is unavailable for tax-inclusive entered amounts.
Are old countertop removal and sales tax included?
Do not assume removal is included in the installed reference range. Add it only if it is separately billed and not already in your quote. No additional tax is assumed: enter your rate and explicitly select taxable, tax-exclusive charges in Advanced Options. Amounts marked as already tax-inclusive are not taxed again.
