🧮 How the Moving Cost Calculator Works
- Choose US or Canada, then your service. Have your written quote or contract terms ready; a move distance category alone does not determine a price.
- Enter the base quote or billing terms. For hourly work, distinguish a per-person rate from a whole-crew rate and confirm truck coverage.
- Confirm loading, unloading, packing labor, packing materials and storage where required. Mark each as included, not needed, known, estimated or still unknown.
- Enable applicable extra costs that are outside the package. Read the known-cost breakdown and unresolved items before relying on a total.
- Once the selected scope is complete, review the separately calculated planning buffer. Update inputs when your quote or plan changes.
📋 Read the cost breakdown
A base quote is the price for a specified package, not proof that every service is covered. An included service belongs to that package and is not added as an extra cost. Independent known or estimated charges appear as additional lines.

Use it to check a quote, plan a rental-truck move, or review which costs remain unconfirmed before booking. To compare providers, use the same inventory, dates and service responsibilities, and record each result before switching service.
📐 Formula and Calculation Logic
Known costs, then a separate buffer
Known subtotal = sum of independently rounded charge lines, counted once.
When complete: contingency = known subtotal × entered percentage ÷ 100, rounded to cents.
Complete planning budget = known subtotal + contingency.
A contingency is money you choose to set aside, not a provider charge or a prediction of the final bill. Partial and incomplete budgets do not receive a contingency or a complete total.
Hourly mover or labor charges
Start with the larger of work minutes + billable travel minutes, or the minimum minutes. Round that duration up to the contract billing increment when one is selected.
Hourly charge = rate × billable minutes ÷ 60. Multiply by worker count only for a per-person rate. A whole-crew or crew-with-truck rate is not multiplied again. Add a separate truck fee only when the truck is not included.
Rental periods, mileage and fuel
Extra-period charge = additional periods × price per extra period. Enter only periods beyond the included allowance, not the total rental duration.
Extra-mileage charge = max(actual distance − included distance, 0) × rate per matching distance unit.
Fuel cost = miles ÷ US mpg × price per US gallon, or kilometres × litres per 100 kilometres ÷ 100 × price per litre. Fuel uses actual driving distance, not just chargeable excess mileage.
One mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometres. Decimal rates and intermediate arithmetic are kept exact; each final charge line is rounded once to cents using nonnegative half-up rounding.
🧾 Worked Example: An Hourly Local Move
These are hypothetical USD inputs, not typical mover prices. The example calls Frozen Formula V1 directly; it does not prefill your form.
- Crew with truck: $120 per hour; loading and unloading covered by the hourly work.
- Work: 150 minutes; billable travel: 30 minutes; minimum: 120 minutes; billing increment: 30 minutes.
- Packing labor and storage: not needed. Packing materials: $40, independently charged.
- Other optional rows: disabled for this demonstration. Planning buffer: 10%.
The billable duration is 180 minutes (3 hours). No worker-count multiplier or separate truck fee applies.

Complete means complete within the modeled scope and enabled costs. Disabled optional costs and unmodeled household expenses are not certified as free. If storage becomes unknown, the known subtotal remains visible but the complete total and buffer are withheld.
🚚 Choose the Right Moving Service Budget
Full-service movers
Use a fixed quote or hourly contract. Confirm exactly which labor and transport services it covers. Packing labor and packing materials are separate checks; the name “full-service” does not automatically make either included.
Moving container
Start with the container quote, identify its included period, then enter additional periods if needed. Confirm loading and unloading separately. Independent storage is distinct from the container's included period; do not enter the same charge twice.
Rental truck / DIY
Use the rental quote, included mileage, additional-period terms and actual driving distance. Add fuel and any hired help. Own-vehicle mode removes rental pricing, extra rental periods and mileage charges, while applicable fuel remains.
Labor-only
Budget the selected loading, unloading or packing work using a fixed quote or hourly terms. A complete selected-service budget is not a complete whole-move budget; it excludes transport and unselected work.

- Incomplete
- The base service price is unknown. Other known charge lines may still exist, but there is no complete total.
- Partial
- The base price is known, but required or enabled costs remain unresolved. Packing labor, packing materials and storage must be confirmed for a whole-move budget, even if the answer is not needed.
- Complete
- The base is known and the selected scope has no unresolved required costs. Explicit estimates can satisfy a cost check, so Complete does not mean all amounts are firm quotes or guaranteed final charges.
Included means confirmed coverage by the base package. Unknown means unresolved, not zero. A duplicate-charge conflict or invalid value returns validation feedback rather than a usable subtotal, contingency or complete budget.
🇺🇸 US and 🇨🇦 Canada inputs
Use USD with the US setting and CAD with Canada. Distance inputs use miles or kilometres respectively; fuel price must match the chosen efficiency unit. Switching region resets the form, with no exchange-rate conversion. Taxes are user-entered amounts, not automatic jurisdictional calculations. International and cross-border pricing are outside this model.

How much do movers cost for my move?
There is no single price that this tool can reliably infer from your move type. Get a quote for your inventory, addresses, date and services, then enter that quote or the actual hourly contract. FigureNorth does not supply market rates or contact moving companies for you.
How are local and long-distance moving costs calculated?
Use the pricing basis stated by your provider. An hourly contract needs its rate basis, billable work and travel time, minimum and billing increment. A fixed quote can be entered directly. Choosing Local or Long distance here does not generate a distance-based mover price or infer shipment weight.
What costs are included in a moving quote?
Only the services your written quote explicitly covers should be marked included. Check loading, unloading, packing labor, materials, storage, access charges and protection separately. A service marked included is not added again. A charge already calculated by the model cannot also be declared included for the same scope.
What extra moving costs should I budget for?
Review access or carry fees, protection, specialty items, lodging, tolls and parking, cleaning, vehicle transport, and taxes not already included. Enable the applicable rows. Costs without a dedicated input, such as overlapping rent, utility setup, meals or pet care, need a separate household budget; a Complete result does not certify those costs.
Is a moving container cheaper than full-service movers?
Not necessarily. Compare current quotes for the same move and account for loading, unloading, packing and storage responsibilities. Keep the container's included rental period separate from additional periods. Record each scenario before changing service: this page resets service-specific inputs and does not save a side-by-side comparison.
Does a rental truck quote include mileage and fuel?
Check the rental agreement rather than assuming either is included. Enter the included distance, excess-distance rate and actual driving distance. Fuel uses that driving distance plus your efficiency and fuel price. Confirm the provider's return-fuel requirement separately. Selecting your own vehicle removes rental charges, not applicable fuel costs.
How do I budget for loading and unloading labor only?
Select Labor-only and the work you need, then enter a quote or hourly terms. A per-person rate multiplies by worker count; a crew rate does not. The resulting budget covers selected labor, not transportation or the whole move. Do not compare it directly with an all-service quote without accounting for the excluded work.
Can I use the calculator before I have all my quotes?
Yes. Leave an unavailable base quote blank or select unknown where offered. Other known charges can still be shown. An unknown base makes the budget Incomplete; a known base with unresolved required costs makes it Partial. Neither state produces a complete budget or contingency amount.
How much contingency should I allow for a move?
Choose a planning percentage that reflects your own remaining uncertainty; this tool does not prescribe a universally sufficient amount. The initial 10% is an editable page default, not a mover fee or formula requirement. A buffer cannot replace an unknown required quote and is calculated only after the selected scope is complete.
Can I use this moving budget calculator in Canada?
Yes. Canada uses CAD and kilometre-based distance inputs; US uses USD and miles. Fuel can use US miles per gallon or litres per 100 kilometres with the matching price unit. Region switching resets the form rather than converting currencies. Enter tax amounts yourself; the calculator does not determine tax rates or price cross-border moves.

This deterministic model uses your prices and exact decimal arithmetic with integer-cent monetary outputs. Identical inputs produce identical results. It separates package coverage from independently charged scopes and validates duplicate charges; it cannot verify whether your provider actually includes a service.
There are no live mover quotes, nationwide default rates, inferred shipment weights, automatic tax rates or default specialty-item fees. A planning budget is not a binding estimate, legal payment calculation or price prediction. The page accepts one entered amount per cost, not a market-derived low/high forecast.
