Planning estimate: This calculator gives a general moving-box planning estimate. Actual needs can vary substantially based on closets, storage areas, books, kitchenware, fragile items, specialty boxes, and how tightly you pack. The 6+ bedroom option is a fixed large-home planning profile rather than an unlimited-size estimate.

Quick answer

The calculator starts with a base box profile for your home size, adjusts each box type for your belongings level, rounds every box category up to a whole box, and then adds the four categories for the total estimate.

How to use the calculator

  1. 1. Choose the home size that most closely matches your move.
  2. 2. Select Minimal, Average, or A lot based on how much you own.
  3. 3. Review the total box estimate and the recommended mix of box sizes.
  4. 4. Add specialty boxes separately for TVs, mirrors, dishes, mattresses, or other unusual items.

How the estimate is calculated

Each home size has a FigureNorth planning profile for small, medium, large, and wardrobe boxes.

As a packing guide, use small boxes for dense items such as books, medium boxes for everyday items, large boxes for bulky lighter items, and wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes.

Minimal uses a 0.80 multiplier, Average uses 1.00, and A lot uses 1.25.

Each category is rounded up separately because you cannot buy a fraction of a box.

Worked example

For a two-bedroom home with an Average amount of belongings, the calculator estimates 12 small boxes, 16 medium boxes, 10 large boxes, and 4 wardrobe boxes.

Frequently asked questions

How many moving boxes do I need?

Choose your home size and how much stuff you have. The calculator estimates small, medium, large, and wardrobe boxes, then adds them for a total planning estimate.

Why does the amount of belongings matter?

Two homes with the same number of bedrooms can have very different packing needs. A minimalist household may need fewer boxes, while fuller closets, storage, collections, and extra belongings can increase the estimate.

What does the Minimal option mean?

Minimal is intended for homes with relatively few belongings and lighter storage. It applies FigureNorth's 0.80 planning multiplier to the base box profile.

What does Average mean?

Average uses the base box profile for the selected home size with no adjustment. It is a general planning baseline rather than an industry-standard household average.

What does A lot mean?

A lot is for homes with more belongings, fuller closets, storage areas, collections, or extra household items. It applies FigureNorth's 1.25 planning multiplier.

Why are the box counts rounded up?

You cannot buy a fraction of a box, so each box category is rounded up separately. This helps avoid underestimating a specific box type.

What are wardrobe boxes for?

Wardrobe boxes are tall boxes designed for hanging clothes. They are estimated separately because their use is different from standard small, medium, and large moving boxes.

Does the estimate include specialty boxes?

No. TV, mirror, picture, dish, mattress, file, electronics, and other specialty boxes are not automatically included because those needs depend on your actual inventory.

What does 6+ bedrooms mean?

It is a fixed planning profile for larger 6+ bedroom homes. It should not be treated as a precise estimate for every very large property.

Is this a precise inventory survey?

No. This is a general planning estimate based on home size and belongings level. Review your actual closets, storage areas, fragile items, and specialty packing needs before buying supplies.
