Estimate disclaimer: This calculator is a planning estimate based on the quote and charges you enter. Actual storage pricing, future rent changes, taxes, insurance requirements, promotions, and provider fees can differ from this estimate.
How much does a storage unit cost?
Storage unit prices vary by size, location, facility, climate control, access type, availability, promotions, and added fees. For a personal budget, start with the actual monthly quote from the provider and the number of months you expect to rent.
Total storage cost = base rent + recurring fees + one-time and known additional charges − promotional credits.
Storage rental cost is the amount you expect to pay for the selected rental period, not just the advertised monthly rent. This self storage cost calculator works from your quote rather than a national average.
How storage unit cost is calculated
The calculator starts with your quoted monthly rent and rental length, then adds any recurring and one-time charges you know about before subtracting a fixed promotional credit.
Base rent
Quoted monthly rent × rental months
Recurring extras
(Monthly insurance + other monthly fees) × rental months
Gross cost
Base rent + recurring extras + one-time fees + known additional charges
Total estimated cost
Gross cost − promotion credit
Effective monthly cost
Total estimated cost ÷ rental months
Calculations use full precision internally. Currency rounding is applied only when the result is displayed.
How to calculate storage unit cost per month
Effective monthly cost = total estimated cost ÷ rental months. Depending on the facility, insurance or protection, recurring charges, administration or move-in fees, locks, access cards, known taxes or surcharges, and promotions may make this different from the advertised monthly rent.
Include only known fees and insurance
Some facilities require proof of coverage or offer a protection plan. Use Monthly insurance / protection for its known monthly cost and Other monthly fees for recurring charges. Enter admin, setup, lock, or move-in charges in One-time fees; use Known additional charges for a quoted tax amount or other non-recurring charge. Not every facility charges every fee, and included costs should not be entered twice.
Estimate 6 months, 12 months, or another rental period
Enter the whole-month duration you plan to rent. At a quoted $150 per month, six months of base rent is $900 and twelve months is $1,800, before insurance, fees, additional charges, or discounts. These are example amounts, not market-price estimates.
Apply a known promotional credit
Promotion credit is the total confirmed money-value discount for the period, not a percentage. If a first-month-free offer provides a $150 rent credit on three months at $150 per month, $450 of base rent becomes $300 before other charges. Check the offer terms; a promotional rate may cover only part of your stay. The calculator does not infer promotion rules or apply a discount every month.
Worked example
This six-month quote totals $1,199.00, or $199.83 per month after the confirmed credit.
Quote
$180/month for 6 months, plus $20/month insurance and $5/month in other recurring fees.
Base rent: $1,080.00 · Recurring extras: $150.00
Additional charges
$29 in one-time fees and $40 in known additional charges.
Before promotion: $1,299.00 · One-time + known charges: $69.00
Promotion
Promotion savings: $100.00. The confirmed credit is subtracted once from the gross cost.
Total: $1,199.00 · Effective monthly cost: $199.83
Why storage unit prices can vary
Storage quotes can vary by unit size, location, local demand, climate control, indoor or drive-up access, floor or elevator access, amenities, availability, promotions, rental duration, and provider pricing policies. This calculator does not assign prices or multipliers to those factors; enter the quote you actually received.
This calculator assumes the quoted monthly rent stays unchanged for the selected period. Some providers may change rates during a longer rental, so check the rental agreement or rate-lock terms when planning long-term storage.
Not sure what size unit you need? Use the Storage Unit Size Calculator before comparing storage quotes. The Size tool estimates space requirements; this Cost tool calculates the price of a quote you already have.
Sources and methodology
The estimate uses only your entered amounts and a constant monthly rent. These provider references explain general pricing factors, possible extra charges, and differing rate policies; their advertised prices and offers are not calculation assumptions.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a storage unit cost?
There is no single storage price for every unit. Rates vary by size, location, facility, features, availability, and promotions. Enter a current provider quote to estimate your own rental cost; this calculator does not retrieve market prices.
How do I calculate storage unit cost?
Multiply the quoted monthly rent by the rental months, add recurring extras over that period and known one-time charges, then subtract the total promotional credit. Only enter charges you expect to pay, without counting an included fee twice.
How much does a storage unit cost per month?
Your quoted rent is the base monthly rate. Effective monthly cost is the total estimate, including applicable fees and promotional credits, divided by rental months. It can differ from the advertised rent, especially for shorter rentals with move-in charges.
Can I calculate storage cost for 6 or 12 months?
Yes. Enter 6, 12, or another whole-month period from 1 to 240. The estimate uses the same quoted monthly rent throughout. Partial-month proration is not calculated automatically.
Can storage rent increase during a long-term rental?
Some providers may change rent or fees during a longer rental, depending on the agreement. This calculator assumes constant quoted rent and does not predict increases. Check notice provisions, promotion terms, and any rate-lock conditions before budgeting.
Does climate control affect storage unit cost?
Climate-controlled units may have different monthly rates than standard units. Enter the actual climate-controlled storage quote you received. The calculator applies no automatic premium or climate-control multiplier.
What extra fees can storage units have?
Depending on the facility, rent may be separate from administration or setup fees, move-in charges, locks, access cards, insurance or protection, and known taxes or surcharges. Use the monthly or one-time fields as appropriate; not every facility charges every fee.
How do I include storage insurance?
Enter the known monthly insurance or protection-plan amount in Monthly insurance / protection if you expect to pay it. Some facilities require proof of coverage or offer a plan, but requirements differ. Leave the field blank if the cost does not apply or is already included.
How does a first-month-free promotion affect the estimate?
Enter the total known money-value credit, not a percentage or a recurring discount. A confirmed $150 rent credit on three months at $150 per month reduces $450 of base rent to $300 before other charges. Offer terms differ, and credit cannot exceed the gross cost.
Can I use this calculator for a 10×10 storage unit?
Yes. To calculate a 10x10 storage unit cost per month or over a rental period, enter its actual monthly quote and rental length. There is no fixed 10×10 price in this model: location, facility, climate control, access, availability, and promotions can affect the quote.
