Painting Cost Calculator

Use this interior painting cost calculator to compare professional painting costs with your DIY cash budget. For interior residential projects, enter a contractor’s fixed quote, actual painted-area rate or hourly labor estimate. Choose US or Canada for currency and area labels; supply your own prices, not assumed local rates.

Project details

Switching countries clears all amounts. There is no automatic currency or area conversion.

Use the contractor's quoted base price.

Used only for a cost-per-area result.

Prevent double counting. Only enter extras that are not included in the contractor’s quoted base price or rate.

Any amounts entered here are included in totals, even when this panel is collapsed.

DIY budget (optional)

Leave every DIY field blank to see only the professional estimate. Enter at least one amount, including an explicit zero, to compare cash costs.

Enter an amount, not a percentage.

Numbers use a period for decimals, such as 2.50. Commas may separate thousands, such as 1,250.50. Blank optional charges count as zero only within a provided estimate.

Estimated project cost

Totals update automatically as you edit the inputs.

Enter the required professional quote or labor details, or choose Try example to see a sample comparison.

Important assumptions

Interior residential projects only. Prices, labor rates and tax or fee amounts are supplied by you. Enter separately charged extras only once. Area means painted surface, not floor space. DIY time is not priced. This estimate does not account for workmanship, warranties, unknown repairs or a contractor's overhead/profit calculations.

When to Use This Calculator

Budget for painting a room or an interior residential project using a quote or labor estimate you already have. Compare options with the same surfaces and scope before committing to a cash budget.

How the painting cost calculator works

Choose one method: the fixed quote, actual painted area × price per sq ft, or billable hours × hourly rate. Painted surface area is not floor area; confirm the painter's area unit and pricing basis before using an area rate. Match quote scope: walls only or walls plus ceilings; trim and doors; coats and primer; preparation and repairs; paint/materials; cleanup and other separate charges; taxes and fees. Add material or preparation costs only when the base quote excludes them.

Professional total = base quote or labor cost + extra materials + preparation + other charges + entered tax/fees.

DIY total = paint and primer + tools and supplies + other DIY costs + entered DIY tax/fees.

DIY cash savings = professional total − DIY total.

DIY savings percentage = (DIY cash savings ÷ professional total) × 100, when a valid DIY estimate exists.

Worked example: compare a contractor and DIY

Suppose a contractor quotes $1,000.00 for the base painting job. Additional material, prep, other charges and tax/fees total $300.00, so the professional cash budget is $1,300.00. If DIY paint, supplies, other items and tax/fees add up to $390.00, the modeled DIY cash saving is $910.00 (70%). The comparison does not price your own time or possible quality differences.

What this tool does not estimate

This is not a paint-coverage calculator, a regional contractor pricing database or a tax estimator. Prices can differ greatly by room condition, contractor, materials and location. For paint quantity planning, use Paint Calculator; for a whole-property interior project, use Interior Renovation Budget Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I estimate the cost of painting a room?

Start with a contractor's fixed quote, a rate for the actual painted surface area, or estimated billable hours and an hourly rate. Add only charges excluded from the base price, including any separate tax or fees. This gives a cash budget for the room; it does not estimate a local painter's price for you.

Should I enter floor area or painted surface area?

Enter actual painted wall or ceiling area, not floor area. A painter's price per square foot may use a different area basis, so confirm both the unit and included surfaces before using that rate here. Do not multiply a floor-area rate by painted surface area. Use FigureNorth's Paint Calculator for paint quantity planning.

Can I calculate labor costs by the hour?

Yes. Select By labor hours and enter estimated billable hours and the quoted hourly rate. Their product is the base painting labor cost; separately charged materials, preparation and fees are added afterward. You supply the hours and rate, so the result is not an automatic local labor estimate.

Is DIY painting always cheaper than hiring a professional?

Not necessarily. This tool compares only your entered cash costs. It does not price your own labor, the value of your time, workmanship, safety, cleanup quality or warranty. If DIY costs are not provided, it will not claim any savings.

What if my contractor quote already includes paint and preparation?

Leave included items out of the additional-charge fields. Check the quote's material, preparation, cleanup and tax details first, then add only separately charged amounts. Entering an included cost twice would overstate the professional total.

Does the painting calculator include ceilings, trim and repairs?

Only if those surfaces and services are included in your measured painted area, fixed quote or explicitly entered extra charges. There is no automatic allowance for ceilings, trim, wallpaper removal, drywall repair or difficult access.

Does the calculator work in Canada?

Yes. Choose CA to label costs in Canadian dollars and painted area in square metres. US uses US dollars and square feet. Switching regions clears the form because this calculator does not convert currencies or measurements automatically.

How is the DIY savings percentage calculated?

DIY cash savings equals professional total minus DIY total. The percentage is (professional total − DIY total) ÷ professional total × 100. A negative value means DIY costs more in the entered cash budget. Leave all DIY fields blank to keep the comparison unavailable; an explicitly entered zero is a valid estimate.

Are sales taxes and local labor rates included automatically?

No. Enter the actual tax or fee amounts applicable to the professional and DIY options. The calculator has no state or provincial tax lookup, current material prices or local labor-rate database.

Does this calculator tell me how many gallons or litres of paint to buy?

No. This tool is for comparing painting cash budgets and contractor pricing. Use the separate Paint Calculator to estimate paint quantities, coats and coverage before entering material costs here.
